Fault List

    • Refrigerator is Tripping the mains

      1. Test the power outlet (use a kettle see if it still trips).
      2. Unplug the fridge and check the power cable for damages.
      3. Unplug the fridge and check that power cable connections are secure on the compressor.
      4. Compressor is faulty and needs replacement.

 

    • Refrigerator does not run and the light does not work and the globe is fine (Free Fix)

      1. Make sure the refrigerator is plugged in securely.
      2. Check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker (basic Fridges don’t have fuses).
      3. Test the power outlet for current (use a kettle).
      4. Unplug the Fridge and Inspect the electrical cord for damage.
      5. Eliminate use of an extension cord, if any is being used.
      6. Check the outlet voltage.

 

    • Refrigerator does not run but the light works

      1. Check the temperature setting.
      2. Make certain there is a three inch space outside of the refrigerator between the walls and the back and sides and at least a one inch gap above, to allow for air flow.
      3. Clean the condenser coils.
      4. Unplug the refrigerator, wait two hours and plug it in. If you hear it running, a problem is causing the compressor to overheat (Possible Block).
      5. Test the temperature control.
      6. Test the evaporator fan if (Frost Free Fridges).
      7. Test the defrost timer (Frost Free Fridges).
      8. Test the compressor relay and Overload.
      9. Test the compressor motor.

 

    • Refrigerator light does not work

      1. Replace the bulb.
      2. Test the door switch.

 

    • Refrigerator or freezer is not cold enough
      1. Check the temperature setting.
      2. Assure that there is enough room for air flow in the refrigerator or freezer.
      3. Check for air flow restrictions in vents.
      4. Test the temperature control.
      5. Clean the condenser coils.
      6. Check the door seals.
      7. Test the door switch (the light may not be switching off when you close the door).
      8. Test the defrost heater.
      9. Test the defrost timer.
      10. Test the evaporator fan.
      11. Check for a clogged drain tube.
      12. Check for Gas leak.

 

    • Refrigerator or freezer is too cold
      1. Check the temperature setting.
      2. Test the temperature control.

 

    • Refrigerator is noisy or makes strange sounds
      1. Hissing and popping is normal on frost free refrigerators, it is the defrost heater.
      2. Check that the refrigerator is level.
      3. Check the drain pan (Its on top of the compressor at the back bottom of the fridge can rattle.
      4. Check the condenser fan (this is found of frost free and commercial coolers).
      5. Check the evaporator fan (this is normally inside the fridge panel or on-top in beverage coolers).
      6. Inspect the compressor mounts (rubbers can become worn and flat).

 

    • Refrigerator runs continuously
      1. Defrost the freezer.
      2. Clean the condenser coils (Black Grill behind or under nest to the compressor (Allows air flow) .
      3. Check the door seals there must be no open spaces.
      4. Clean the door seals.
      5. Test the door switch (Light may not be switching off when you close the door).
      6. If you recently adjusted the temperature control, loaded the refrigerator or are in a humid location, it is not uncommon for a refrigerator to run for 24 hours or more before getting cool.

 

    • Refrigerator starts and stops frequently
      1. Clean the condenser coils.
      2. Check the outlet voltage.
      3. Test the condenser fan.
      4. Test the compressor relay.
      5. Test the overload protector.
      6. Test the compressor motor

 

    • Freezer does not defrost automatically (Frost free fridges only)
      1. Test the defrost timer.
      2. Test the defrost heater.
      3. Test the defrost thermostat.

 

    • Refrigerator has an unpleasant odor
      1. Remove spoiled food.
      2. Clean refrigerator interior with a solution of hot water and baking soda.
      3. Clean the door seals.
      4. Remove breaker strips and check for wet insulation.

 

    • Water on floor outside of refrigerator
      1. Check the drain pan.
      2. If you have an ice-maker, check the water supply hose going into and coming out of the water inlet valve.

 

    • Water inside the refrigerator
      1. Clean the drain tube.
      2. If you have an ice-maker, check refrigerator and ice-maker for level.
